Ferrari unviels The 2017 LaFerrari Convertible And It's Already Sold Out




The convertible version of Ferrari’s incredible LaFerrari supercar is finally here. Well, three pictures of it, anyway. There’s a lot we don’t know about the car including the price, the name, the technical characteristics, how many will be sold, or when it will be available.

We do know that it will have the same engines as the original LaFerrari, including 949 combined horsepower from its 6.3-liter V12 and its 120 kW electric motor, as well as identical performance figures including a 0-60 time of 2.4 seconds and a top-speed of 217 mph.



"Significant and extensive modifications" have been made to the open-top LaFerrari to retain the same stiffness as the coupe version, and the aerodynamics have been improved to deliver the same drag coefficient even when the roof is removed. The car will come with both a carbon fiber hard top and soft top.



Ferrari says the name, price, and other information on the car will be announced at the Paris Motor Show in October. It won’t really matter, though: all examples of the car have already been sold to hand-picked Ferrari owners.

BMW to develop autonomous car technology with Intel, Mobileye









BMW is teaming up with Intel and Mobileye to develop new technology for the auto industry that could put self-driving cars on the road by around 2021.





The alliance highlights a shift in the dynamics of research and development in the car industry, which until recently saw automakers largely dictating terms for suppliers to manufacture their proprietary technologies at specified volumes and prices. 







Now carmakers are increasingly striking up partnerships with technology firms using open technology standards, seeking to harness their expertise in areas including machine learning and mapping as they race against Silicon Valley companies such as Google , Tesla and Apple to develop driverless vehicles. 




"Highly autonomous cars and everything they connect to will require powerful and reliable electronic brains to make them smart enough to navigate traffic and avoid accidents,” Intel Chief Executive Brian Krzanich said on Friday at a joint news conference announcing the alliance.



The three companies said their new platform would be made available to multiple carmakers and they expected vehicles with highly and fully-automated driving would be brought into mass production by 2021. It is too early to say which other carmakers would join the alliance, BMW Chief Executive Harald Krueger said at a news conference on the outskirts of Munich on Friday.



Sophisticated cruise control systems already enable "hands off" driving as cameras and computers allow cars to automatically brake, steer and accelerate in traffic at low speeds. But drivers are required to stay in control. 



Now BMW, Intel and Mobileye will develop cars with even higher levels of automation described as "eyes off," "mind off," and "driver off". This requires much more computing power and software know-how, forcing traditional carmakers to collaborate more closely with technology specialists.



Both industries see huge revenue opportunities in the market for autonomous vehicles, although it is unclear how many drivers will be prepared to relinquish control and how quickly laws will be put in place to allow fully autonomous vehicles on the roads.



But creating common technology standards would help all manufacturers update their vehicles faster, Intel Chief Executive Brian Krzanich said. "That will be critical for advancing the safety aspects of this." 



A common approach to standards will also make it easier for regulators to understand and approve the roadworthiness of a vehicle while still leaving enough scope for individual car manufacturers to customize their cars, Mobileye Chairman Amnon Shashua said.



Beyond technological hurdles there are legal questions over who is responsible when a crash occurs. On Thursday, the driver of a Tesla Model S car, operating in Autopilot mode, was killed in a collision with a truck in the United States, prompting an investigation by federal highway safety regulators. 



When asked about the crash, BMW CEO Harald Krueger said: "The accident is very sad .... We believe today the technologies are not ready for series production," he added, explaining the alliance had not forecast that until 2021.




"For the BMW group, safety comes first," he said. 


As part of the new alliance, Intel, the world's largest computer chip maker which has been looking to expand into the automotive electronics market, will supply the microprocessors - or central processing units - to control an array of sensors.




Auto camera and software maker Mobileye will supply its Road Experience Management (REM) technology and make its latest EyeQ5 chip available to be deployed on Intel computing platforms.

The three companies said they would demonstrate their technology in a prototype in the near future.

Meet the new 2018 Mercedes-AMG GT R



This week, Mercedes-Benz has officially debuted its much-anticipated 2018 Mercedes-AMG GT R. The automobile boasts more motorsport technology than any other production vehicle on the planet.

The hand-built DOHC 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 powering the GT-R sits in same mid-front position as the rest of the GT lineup, but churns out 74 hp more than the current top-performing GT-S. This bump brings the GT-R's total output to 577 hp. The two turbos spool to a maximum speed of 186,000 revolutions per minute and stop building boost at 19.6 psi. That air is then rushed through liquid-to-air intercoolers before it’s stuffed into the engine.



All those ponies go to the rear 20-inch lightweight aluminum wheels by way of a seven-speed dual clutch transaxle. Nestled inside the transaxle is also a much-needed limited slip differential.

If you plan on tracking this, Mercedes has you in mind. The GT-R uses a dry sump oiling system to help keep the engine happily lubricated while cornering. 



While the power is undeniably impressive, it’s not all that's special about this Benz. This AMG GT-R sports rear-wheel steering, active aero and a double-wishbone coil-over front and rear suspension.

The active aero kicks on in race mode, while going over 50 mph. The system drops a carbon fiber underbody spoiler just in front of the engine by 1.6 inches -- reducing front axle lift by over 80 pounds at 155 mph.



Both the front and rear double-wishbone suspensions use forged aluminum control arms with adjustable coil-overs that still use AMG Ride Control active damping. Before hitting 62 mph, the rear-wheel steering turns the rear wheels by about 1.5 degrees in the opposite direction of the front wheels -- increasing maneuverability. From 62 mph to the GT-R's top speed of 198 mph, the wheels begin to turn the same direction as the front wheels, which should help you change lanes while you're tearing down the Autobahn.

Responsible for slowing this beast are the gigantic standard equipment 15.4-inch front and 14.2-inch rear perforated steel rotors. If that isn’t good enough, you can spring for the 15.8-inch front and 14.2-inch rear carbon ceramic rotors.

The 2018 Mercedes-AMG GT R will arrive in U.S. dealerships by mid-2017.but it won’t be cheap. Mercedes hasn’t released the price yet, but considering the base AMG GT-S starts at $130,825 -- we can only imagine how much extra it’ll be.
