Twitch reveals it will convert its streaming video to HTML5 next year

Twitch, the popular game-streaming service that is currently holding its first community eventTwitchCon in San Francisco's Moscone Center, announced during yesterday's keynote that it will overhaul its live-streaming video players and controls from Flash to HTML5. The changeover will take place in the second quarter of 2016.
The new technology will allow Twitch to offer its service to more platforms without having to hassle with third-party app support.
In other news, Twitch said that it was updating its Whisper private-messaging app with a feature that pops out messages so users can't miss them and that conversations will transfer back and forth from web to mobile.
Twitch also said it would allow streamers to create custom thumbnails for past broadcasts and highlights.
The two-day TwitchCon event will conclude on Saturday evening Pacific time.

Amazon’s Twitch to add video uploads in new battle with YouTube

Twitch just strayed into direct competition with YouTube.
Emmett Shear, chief executive of Amazon’s Twitch division, announced at the TwitchCon convention today that the company will add video uploads and playlists in 2016.
Twitch has more than 100 million monthly active users for its gameplay livestreaming service, as well as 1.7 million live broadcasters. But now the company will make it possible for players to upload video to Twitch, starting next year. With uploads, that means that users can create videos, but won’t have to livestream them first.
That means you can create produced videos, rather than create only live videos. And that’s certainly the heart and soul of Google’s YouTube video platform.
Playlists also help organize your past streams on your channel so that they can be viewed in a non-live way more easily.
