LG's new fingerprint sensor is embedded in the glass screen of a smartphone

http://pocketnow.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/lg-fingerprint-under-glass-e1462149362839.jpg

LG Innotek has invented a fingerprint sensor embedded in the glass screen of a smartphone which could help enable future button-less designs.

Previous fingerprint reader designs have required a separate piece of hardware -- as seen on recent Apple iPhones, Samsung Galaxy phones, the Nexus 6P and LG's own G5, to name just a few. But the new reader from Innotek, an LG subsidiary, is mounted underneath the glass in a shallow furrow 0.01-inches (0.3mm) thick.

LG said in addition to improving waterproof capabilities the technology is also highly secure with reads of 99.998 percent accuracy.

LG has yet to announce any phones which will be using the sensor nor any third-party companies. However, competitor Apple, which has used LG displays in the past, is rumored to be considering a "home button-less" design for its iPhone 7. LG's technology could help the Cupertino giant achieve this.

Apple isn't the only company that knows how to build an unbelievably thin and light laptop.
The LG Gram 15, announced at CES on Tuesday, is possibly the world's lightest 15-inch laptop. The LG Gram line of laptops are notebooks that weigh about a kilogram which is estimated to be 2.16 pounds. It's lighter than Apple's new MacBook Pro — the 15" version of which weighs 4.4 pounds.
The Gram 15 is also thin — 0.7 inches, and extremely durable, thanks to its magnesium alloy construction.
The 15-inch screen comes with full HD (1,920 x 1,080) resolution and IPS technology for wide viewing angles. Sixth-generation Intel Core i5 or i7 processors power Windows 10. features HDMI and USB 3.0 ports including a USB Type-C port, and there will be models with 8GB of RAM and 256GB or 512GB SSD. LG says battery life on the Gram 15 is up to seven hours; there's also an HD webcam above the screen for crystal-clear videoconferencing.
Laptop speakers usually get neglected in the slimming process, but LG claims the Gram 15's Cirrus Logic stereo digital-analog converter is capable of outputting Hi-Fi sound with less noise and distortion. LG says the notebook will be available in the first half of 2016.

LG's new robot vacuum uses your phone to show how dirty you really are

LG is starting to announce its CES 2016 lineup, and one of the first products is the new HOM-BOT Turbo+ vacuum. It's a cordless, robotic sort of deal that's doesn't look unlike other vacuums in this category. But this one's got a little trick up its sleeve. Or, rather, in your pocket.

The HOM-BOT Turbo+ uses a "Triple Eye" system of cameras to record the room and figure out where it's already cleaned. And the front-facing camera also feed into an Android app, allowing you to control the little thing remotely — and give you a peek at what's going on while you're not there. It also can fire over still pictures of your home should it detect movement. LG calls these "Home-View" and "Home-Guard." We call it a hell of a fun idea if you've got pets or small children, and an interesting home security backup.

LG finally announces its first full metal smartphone, the luxury LG Zero

LG is going all metal. Sadly this doesn't mean long hair, noodly guitar solos and grumpily refusing to leaves its bedroom while listening to Slayer - instead this is the release of the LG Zero, the company's first smartphone with a full metal body.
With a case made of solid aluminium, the Zero sports an "Arc Glass" design on the edges to make it appear slimmer. This is very much a fancy looking phone, designed for people who care about fashion and flaunting their implied wealth.
Spec-wise things are little more mid-range. The phone sports a 5-inch In-Cell Touch 720p IPS display, which the company claims delivers faster recognition, crisper images and is better for viewing outdoors.
It is powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core processor with 1.5GB of RAM - and has 16GB of storage. It comes running Android Lollipop - though surely we can expect an upgrade to Marshmallow at some point?
The camera though is up there with LG's current flagship handset, the G4 - matching it with a 13MP camera in the rear and an 8MP camera on the front.
Exact pricing and availability hasn't been announced yet, though LG has confirmed that the device will be hitting Taiwan this week, followed by Asia, Europe and Latin America at some point in the future.

LG Smart TVs will soon have Google Play Movies and TV, a first outside of Android TV

LG just gave you another reason to buy a Smart TV. In over 100 countries, LG is adding Google Play Movies and TV to its native lineup.
The first to see the new content will be the United States, Canada, the UK and Australia. All of LG’s WebOS TVs will get the new content, and older models running NetCast 4.0 or 4.5 will see the option later this month.
Users can rent or buy TV episodes or movies via smartphone, tablet or the TV itself. That content is watchable on any device that has access to Google Play Movies and TV.
LG is the first outside of the Android TV ecosystem to gain this content. While it may seem like no big deal at first, it does show Google is interested in democratizing its content delivery, unlike Apple.

LG Confirms That It’s Working On A Mobile Payments Service

Soon after Samsung Pay emerged on the scene earlier this year it was reported that LG could come out with its own mobile payment serviceand those reports have now turned out to be true. There’s news out of Korea that LG has confirmed that it is working on a mobile payments service, the company will first sign deals with some of the major card companies in South Korea before officially launching its service.
Shinhan Card and KB Kookmin Card are two of the largest card companies in South Korea so it is quite possible that LG would seek to sign a deal with them first before its mobile payment service is formally launched.
The company did not confirm what it is going to call this service through it has registered trademarks that include “LG G Pay,” such a moniker would be in line with the company’s naming practice for its smartphones and would certainly not be out of place in the LG ecosystem.
It’s unclear what technology LG’s mobile payments service will be based on. Samsung Payuses both NFC and MST which make it compatible with almost every card terminal, the merchant doesn’t need to get special terminals, and that has done wonders for its adoption in both the United States and South Korea.
Those details would come to light later when LG is ready to disclose more information about its mobile payments service, it wouldn’t be risky to assume that the service would first be launched in South Korea before LG brings it to other markets across the globe.

LG Display envisions a future of flexible, wafer-thin OLED displays

Your next TV will be bright, see-through, bendy, and very, very thin. The next release of LG's OLED screens are wafer thin and extremely flexible, explained Dr. Sang-Beom Han, CEO of LG Display, during the opening keynote of the IFA 2015 conference in Germany.
“We are now living in an era of displays,” Dr. Han told the crowd. “Through displays, we share information. Through displays, we communicate. Through displays, we look into the future and dream about it,” he said, before explaining that the perfect display of tomorrow would combine two essentials: reality and dynamic form.
LG already uses OLED technology in its curved TVs, including the impressive 77EG9900, which can change from curved to flat at the touch of a button on the remote control. You'll also find it in LG's smartwatch range and in the curved LG G Flex 2 smartphone.
Dr. Ching W. Tang, the “father of OLED” and a professor at the University of Rochester in New York and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, then took to the stage to explain how OLED was originally developed and talk up its merits.
“Without backlight and other auxiliary layers, the OLED display is fundamentally less complicated compared to LCD, and in time less costly to manufacture. I have no doubt, given its advanced features and superior performance — foldable, wearable, flexible, and transparent — OLED is the display technology for the next generation,” Tang explained.
We also heard from Prof. Peter Zec, founder and president of the Red Dot Design Award, Udo Heider, Vice President of Merck, and famous movie director Sir Ridley Scott about how OLED is a game changer that will soon dominate the market.
Dr. Han spoke of a future where windows, desks, and even walls are made of displays. OLEDs can take any shape, they're flexible, and they can be transparent, so there's real potential for augmented reality in the future. He also suggested that we might soon be folding larger displays up and putting them in our pockets.
On display after the talk was a 55-inch double-sided OLED display from LG that was just 5.3 mm thick, and a flexible wallpaper display with a magnetic backing at just 1 mm thick. The company also showed off a prototype 111-inch “wave” double-sided display constructed from three attached 65-inch Ultra HD OLED displays.
We should see this kind of display technology filtering into the market within the next few years.

LG announces new sensor that smartens up your old appliance site

LG's new SmartThingQ sensor attaches to compatible home appliances to smarten them up.
LG LG have already said they'll show off a new tablet at this week's IFA convention in Berlin. But that's far from the only gadget up the company's sleeve, as on Monday the South Korean electronics giant announced its new SmartThinQ Sensor.
The sensor attaches to compatible home appliances to make them "smart-aware," feeding information to the user through a corresponding SmartThinQ app.

According to LG, if the device is attached to a washing machine it will notify the user when a laundry cycle is done. Similarly, if you stick it to your fridge, LG claims that the SmartThinQ will let you know when food is about to expire.

The combination of the sensor and app will also provide a remote control function for appliances like air conditioners.
LG will also be showing its Wi-Fi enabled Smart Lightwave Oven, for which users can set the temperature and cooking time through their smartphones, and Smart Air Conditioner, which can also be controlled via mobile device.

"Adoption of smart home appliances has been slow because of the perception that the technology is not easily accessible," said Jo Seong-jin, president and CEO of the company's Home Appliance and Air Solution division, in a statement.

It's the second straight Monday that LG have unveiled new gadgets, as last week they announced the G PAD II 10.1, an Android-based tablet with a 10.1-inch screen and 2.26GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor.

Expect more on LG's new range of smart gadgets, G PAD II and more from IFA Berlin, which kicks off on September 4.

The LG Watch Urbane Luxe is a 23-karat gold smartwatch for $1,200

The LG Watch Urbane's vanilla model was already huge, but for people who want their Android Wear smartwatch to be really eye-catching, the company is now offering a limited-edition 23-karat gold version for the low low price of $1,200. The LG Watch Urbane Luxe offers exactly the same technical specs as the regular Urbane, released earlier this year, but attempts to justify its pricetag with a gold body, a strap made of alligator leather, and an "exclusive" shiny lacquer case.
"Wearable devices shouldn't be thought of as an extension of one's smartphone but an extension of oneself," says LG's Chris Yie, apparently indicating that the only people who'd buy the Urbane Luxe are coated in gold and clad in alligator skin. Certainly, if you do drop the $1,200 on a dressed-up Android Wear smartphone, you'll be a member of an exclusive club — only 500 of the golden watches will be made, in partnership with Reeds Jewelers in the US. The Urbane Luxe might not be as ostentatious a device as a $10,000 Apple Watch Edition, but it is a chance to strap a slab of gold to your wrist and have it do a little more than just tell the time.

LG Unveils Rolly Keyboard, A Bluetooth Rollable Keyboard

IFA in Berlin is right around the corner, the show will commence at the very beginning of next month, and by the looks of it, we're going to see lots of goodies being showcased by various companies. LG is one of the companies which will be at the show, and they'll show off their recently announced G Pad II tablet, and quite probably their existing line of products, including the LG G4 flagship. That being said, LG has just announced that another new device will be officially unveiled at IFA, and the company has shared its details with us today, read on.

This time around we're not talking about a separate device, but about an accessory to LG's existing products. The company has just showcased the first solid rollable wireless portable keyboard called LG Rolly Keyboard (KBB-700). This keyboard actually folds up along the four rows, and basically creates a stick that you can fit into your briefcase, pocket or wherever you want. You'll get a much better idea of what we're talking about here if you take a look at the images in a gallery down below. The LG Rolly Keyboard has a 17mm key pitch, which is close to the 18mm key pitch you can find on most desktop units. The keyboard is made out of impact-resistant polycarbonate and ABS plastic, in case you were wondering. It is also worth mentioning that this is a Bluetooth 3.0 keyboard, and it is powered by an AAA battery, which should be able to power this thing up to three months (average use) according to the company.

“LG Rolly Keyboard is just one of the many premium input devices we'll be unveiling in the coming months as we expand our accessories offerings. The goal was to create a product that could add more value to LG smartphones and tablets at the same time offering a unique design proposition that hadn't been explored before,” said Seo Young-jae, Vice President in charge of Innovative Personal Devices at LG Electronics. LG will release the full details regarding this keyboard at IFA 2015, but the company did mention that they'll roll out this keyboard in the US in September, and Europe, Latin America and Asia will follow in Q4. The pricing will be announced once they keyboard arrives in select markets, and the US price will quite probably be revealed at IFA.

This could be Google's new Nexus 5 smartphone, built by LG

We waved goodbye to the Nexus 5 when Google stopped selling its 2013 flagship Android smartphone earlier this year, but it might be time to say hello to a revamped version. Rumors in May suggested that Google was working with partners Huawei and LG to produce two new Nexus phones — a 5.7-inch Huawei device, and a 5.2-inch model with the Korean manufacturer. Now, thanks to a leaked photo originally posted in the Nexus Indonesia Google+ community, we might have our first glimpse of the new Nexus 5 in the wild.
The image resembles renders of the rumored LG Nexus
The picture shows the back of a white Nexus device. At the base is a sticker featuring a small red circle that appears to be LG's logo, suggesting this phone, if legitimate, is the LG device rather than the Huawei collaboration. At the top is a camera lens, and just underneath, a similarly sized circle that looks to be the rumored fingerprint scanner. The image closely resembles renders of the supposed LG device, leaked late last week, with a rounded back and a camera that appears to protrude slightly from the case.
Renders that supposedly show the rumored Huawei Nexus 6 also leaked at the same time, based on blueprints of the phone apparently sent out to third-party accessory manufacturers ahead of launch. A potential Huawei Nexus could be beneficial for both Google and the Chinese company, helping to strengthen Google's presence in China, and simultaneously building the young manufacturer's brand in the United States. There's no concrete date set for either phone's launch yet, but The Information reported in July that they're likely to hit shelves in fall this year.

The reason we may get two Nexus phones in 2015? It's because of Android Pay

There are rumors Google will launch, for the first time, two Nexus smartphones this year, one made by LG and the other by Huawei. Why? According to a report published by Business Korea, it's due to Android Pay — Google's contactless mobile payment system, which it announced earlier this year.
Quoting anonymous industry sources, the report states that Google has chosen the two companies for their experience in different markets. The LG produced Nexus phone will come with Android Pay installed — and its release is expected to coincide with Android Pay's rollout — and Google wants to use LG's success and brand recognition in North America and Europe to help promote the payment system.
Huawei, although known in America and Europe, has far higher recognition in China and Asia. The insider says Google wants Huawei's assistance to gain more power in China, where many of its services are inaccessible, and custom builds of Android and third-party application stores are common. Android Pay is unlikely to work in China, and therefore a Nexus phone with it as standard probably wouldn't be sold there.
LG hasn't made any moves into the mobile payments world just yet, although the spin-off, Korea-only 4G Watch Urbane smartwatch has the facility to provide NFC-based payments. Rival Samsung is in the final stages of producing its own mobile payments system, named Samsung Pay. Logically, that puts Samsung out of the running to make a Nexus phone dedicated to Android Pay, and LG in search of a mobile payments partner of its own.
It's mentioned that the LG Nexus phone will have a 5-inch display — a rumor we've heard before, and making it more likely the phone will be referred to as the Nexus 5 2015 — while Huawei may go for a larger 5.7-inch display. October is being rumored as the release date for the LG phone, and the Huawei device is likely to accompany it.
