Drones will soon be like cars.
People will wander down the street on Sunday morning, stopping to polish theirs and wondering which of the neighbors can afford the others.
Behold, then, Sony's delightful drone lifting off on a test flight. When I say lifting off, this drone takes off vertically before buzzing its way around the skies.
Sony announced in July its creation of a drone company called Aerosense. It's a joint venture with Japanese robotics startup ZMP. At the time of the announcement, Sony told The Wall Street Journal that the idea was not to sell the drones, but to sell the business services the drones could deliver.
On Tuesday, the Journal reported that this delightful machine can fly nonstop for two hours, that its maximum speed is 106 mph and that it can carry weights of up to 22 pounds. It can be used to survey as well as to carry. (I'm sure it can be used to surveil as well as to harry, too.)
As to concrete plans for the potential marketing of this fine flying machine, Sony wasn't immediately available to comment.
It will be interesting to see, as drones become ever more common -- and, for some, annoying -- how much aesthetics will become more important than performance.
Will people feel that the features of a drone will outweigh its beauty?
Let me put it another way: Can we look forward, one day, to the drone equivalent of Apple vs. Android?
