Google's 17th birthday celebrated with a Google doodle

Google is today celebrating the 17th year of its inception with a doodle on its homepage. Known for its beautiful animated doodles, Google's 17th birthday doodle is a rather subdued affair.
Unlike last year's doodle that showed the letters in its logo having a party, this year's doodle takes you back in time. The doodle depicts life in the late 90's with a huge CRT monitor and Google's old website shown on it. It features the old Google logo, as well as a Linux penguin peeking out from behind, alongside a server made of Lego bricks.
While Google is celebrating its birthday today, that has not always been the case. After its inception in 1998 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the company initially marked its birthday on September 8. In 2004 however the company changed its birthday to September 7. The celebrations on September 7 went on till 2005, when it was again changed to September 27. The reason – it was the day of Google's announcement of the record number of pages that the search engine was indexing.
This confusion however is far from over, and Google could very well decide to change its birthday next year. On August 11 this year, Google announced a major restructuring, which culminated in the formation of a parent company called 'Alphabet'.
