When talking about Microsoft and virtual reality, HoloLens is the first thing that comes to our mind. But it looks like Microsoft is all geared up with its VR Kit to take on Google Cardboard that offers a low-cost VR experience on its smartphones.
Microsoft is trying to attract developers to attend a hackathon event that is set to take place in Russia on October 17. The company is inviting developers to come up with VR app ideas of for its VR platform. That's not all; on successful suggestions, Microsoft is also giving cardboard headsets to the developers.
If you look at the image, the VR Kit looks similar to Google Cardboard. It works by inserting the Lumia smartphone into the cardboard box and holding it to your face. The hackathon event will focus on three categories – game, education and best corporate apps. A winner in each category will also be chosen at the event.
Microsoft is really working hard on HoloLens 'mixed reality' technology. If it turns out to be anything close to the demos that we've seen so far, it sure has the potential to blow the mobile VR out of equation. Still, with the VR Kit, it will be interesting to see how Microsoft manages to bring good VR experience to its Windows 10 Mobile OS.
