One of Lamborghini's previous special-edition cars, the Veneno, sold for nearly $5 million. Don't expect the next one to be a bargain
Following in the tradition of the Sesto Elements and the Veneno, Lamborghini will announce yet another small-batch special edition at the upcoming 2016 Geneva International Motor Show. This time, its unveiling is timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the company's founder, Ferruccio Lamborghini.
In an interview with UK-based Auto Express, Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann confirmed the new car's Geneva launch, but left many details to the imagination. "In terms of renderings, it is known to the customers already. It will be something like [our one-off cars], a coupe bodystyle." Auto Express claims that the car will be called the Centenario, which is Italian for centennial.
As every car enthusiast on the planet could guess, the Centenario won't be cheap. "[The price is] in the environment of what we have done before," Winkelmann said. For a bit of context, the Veneno, a previous special-edition Lambo, sold for approximately $4.5 million (directly converted, about £2.9M or AU$6.1M). The automaker will produce 20 copies, way more than the Veneno's nine-car production run.
Lamborghini remains tight-lipped on any drivetrain details. Auto Express believes that the Centenario will likely pack a modified version of the 12-cylinder engine currently in the Aventador. Right now, its most powerful iteration puts out 740 horsepower, and any special edition is likely to trump that.
The automaker did not immediately return a request for comment. The 2016 Geneva International Motor Show starts the first week of March.
