Recent rumors had suggested that Lenovo islooking to discontinue its 'Vibe' brand of smartphones in favor of two of its other brands already in circulation in the market, as part of the company's growing smartphone business. According to the report last week from market research and analysis firm Canalys, while the Motorola brand will be operational at the middle and premium ends of the spectrum, the Lemon brand will apparently do duties at the entry and mid-levels of the smartphone market. The report actually claimed to have quoted Lenovo's Mobile Business Group president, Mr. Chen Xudong, as the source of its information. The Chinese tech company however, has now come out and denied in no uncertain terms that it ever considered doing away with its Vibe brand. Indian news network NDTV is now reporting that Lenovo has strongly denied the rumors from last week, saying that it has no such intentions whatsoever.
According to the report carried on Monday by the Indian news organization, an official spokesperson from Lenovo has issued a denial to last week's reports about the company's supposed plans to retire the Vibe brand for its smartphone lineup. As per an emailed response to a query from the Gadgets 360 unit of NDTV, not only is Lenovo not doing away with Vibe, it will actually be releasing new Vibe-branded products in the coming months. “Vibe remains an important brand in the Lenovo mobile family,” the spokesperson for Lenovo is believed to have told NDTV, adding, “We plan to continue to expand and grow the franchise in select markets around the world”.
It will be interesting to see how the entire thing pans out in the end, as the company already has multiple brands selling a number of devices, very often at the same price points with not much distinction between them. While Lemon, Vibe and Motorola have already been present for a while now, earlier this year, Lenovo launched a whole new brand called Zuk, in partnership with Chinese security software maker Qihoo 360. The new brand has already announced its first smartphone this year called the Zuk Z1, which comes with Cyanogen OS pre-installed.
